Genie Roller Replacement: The Dripping Springs Owner’s Guide

Genie roller replacement in Dripping Springs typically runs $110 to $220 installed, and we carry the parts on the truck so the job is usually done in under an hour. You’ll know a roller is gone when the door starts shuddering on the way up, hangs up on one side, or sounds like a shopping cart with a flat wheel. Most folks in Dripping Springs don’t notice the first one failing because the rest of the rollers keep the door moving, just louder and rougher than it should.

The thing about rollers is they wear unevenly. The bottom two take the most weight and grit, so they fail first. By the time you hear it, there’s usually a second roller not far behind. That’s why we quote per roller but always inspect all of them when we’re in there.

Which Genie Models This Applies To

Genie has been building residential garage doors for decades, and the roller specs vary by series. The IntelliG and TriloG series take a standard 2-inch nylon roller with a 7/16-inch stem, which is what we stock most often for Dripping Springs homes. Older Genie doors from the 1990s and early 2000s sometimes used a 1-inch roller in the top bracket only, while the rest of the door ran 2-inch. That’s a compatibility gotcha worth knowing: if someone replaces all your rollers with 2-inch without checking that top bracket, the door binds at the header.

OEM Genie rollers are fine, but most of what we install are quality aftermarket nylon rollers from brands we trust, and honestly they hold up just as well in Texas heat. The real difference is the bearing count. A stock Genie roller has 10 ball bearings. We typically install 13-ball-bearing nylon rollers, which run quieter and last longer on doors that cycle multiple times a day. You can find the model number on a sticker near the top section of the door or on the lock bar, but if it’s faded from sun, don’t worry. We identify what’s on the door by measuring the stem and wheel diameter, which takes about ten seconds.

We’re an independent shop, not affiliated with Genie. That means we stock what actually works for this market, including parts for LiftMaster and Chamberlain openers that often hang on the same door.

Signs Your Genie Roller Replacement Is Failing

  • Loud squealing or grinding when the door moves. That’s a seized bearing. The wheel has stopped rolling and is now dragging metal-on-metal against the track. If you keep running it, the track wears thin and that’s a bigger fix.
  • Door shakes or shudders as it travels. One or more rollers have flat spots or play in the stem, so the door isn’t riding straight anymore. You’ll feel it in the opener too, and that strain shortens the opener motor’s life.
  • Door hangs up on one side and then jerks loose. A roller has come out of the track or the stem is so worn it can slip. This is also how doors come off the track entirely, which can leave your garage wide open overnight.
  • The door looks crooked when it’s closing. Worn rollers let one side sag. The cables are doing extra work to compensate, and cable wear follows roller wear almost every time in Dripping Springs because of the limestone dust that gets into everything out here.
  • You see black rubber or nylon shavings on the floor by the track. The wheel itself is disintegrating. In Hill Country heat, cheap plastic rollers get brittle fast and shed material until there’s nothing left but the bearing cage.

Replacement Cost & What’s Included

In Dripping Springs, roller replacement runs $110 to $220 depending on how many rollers you’re replacing and which bearing count you choose. A single basic roller swap on the low end, a full set of 13-ball-bearing nylon rollers on the high end. The price we quote on the phone is the price you pay when the job is done. Not a penny more at the door.

That price includes the rollers, the labor, and a check of the track alignment while we’re in there. If we find a bent track or a loose bracket, we’ll tell you and quote that separately before we touch it. You agree to the number before any work starts, every time. The work is covered by our 90-Day Done Right Promise, in writing on the invoice. If it’s not right, Otto comes back and makes it right. One call.

DIY or Call Us?

You can safely inspect your rollers without touching anything under tension. Run the door halfway up, look at each roller where it meets the track, and check for wobble, flat spots, or cracked wheels. That’s worth doing so you know what you’re dealing with before you call.

What we don’t recommend is replacing rollers yourself. The bottom roller brackets are bolted to the door, but the bottom bracket also anchors the lift cable. That cable is under serious tension from the spring system, and if it comes loose while you’re unbolting the bracket, it can take a finger or worse. A door is 200 pounds riding on two springs. Respect it. Let a trained pair of hands do the swap. Call Otto at (737) 353-5361 and he’ll walk you through what he thinks you’ve got before we even roll the truck.
